The Rise and Fall of the First Obesity Crisis: USA 1930s-1970s (#80)

In this talk I recount how obesity was discovered as a major contributor to chronic disease in the US during 1930s and 1940s, and targeted in a high profile public health campaign in the 1950s.  I also describe the decline in concern about obesity during the 1960s and early 1970s because of developments in heart disease epidemiology and also because, I argue, of both cultural changes and the influence of the sugar industry on science.
