Sheila Collins

Sheila Collins is a Professor of Medicine and Molecular Physiology at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She completed her PhD at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and postdoctoral training at Duke University in the areas of protein biochemistry, signal transduction, and gene transcription. Prof Collins' laboratory is interested in the biochemical mechanisms that regulate body weight and insulin sensitivity, with a particular focus on adipocyte biology. She has worked for many years on the regulation of brown and white adipocyte metabolism, with a strong emphasis on dissecting the signaling pathways from the G-protein coupled β-adrenergic receptors. This work has been extended more recently to include how the cardiac natriuretic peptides modulate fat cell metabolism through a parallel and complementary signaling cascade.
