Paul Kelly
Professor Paul Kelly is a public health physician, epidemiologist and health service executive. He has also worked in research, health systems development and post-graduate teaching. This has included five years as Director of the Masters of Applied Epidemiology Program at the Australian National University and nine years in the Northern Territory as a Principle Research Fellow with the Menzies School of Health Research, and as a public health physician with the NT Department of Health. Prof. Kelly’s work has taken him to five countries on four continents including Malawi, Indonesia, East Timor, and the UK.
He is currently a member of the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee and an expert advisor on obesity and on burden of disease for the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. He is a member of two World Health Organization Advisory Groups – the International Health Regulations Roster of Experts and the Nutritional Guidelines Advisory Group.
Professor Kelly has 30 years research experience and has published over 120 peer reviewed journal articles and book chapters. His research and professional interests include: health services and population health systems and whole of government policy approaches to non-communicable disease control and prevention, in particular obesity prevention.
For eight years from 2011, he was the Australian Capital Territory’s Chief Health Officer. During that time, he led the team which designed, implemented and evaluated the award winning ACT Government Healthy Weight Initiative which successfully addressed the antecedents of obesity in that jurisdiction.
